PRESS:

"Spanish Prisoners are a band I've been meaning to write about for a while, as I thought their debut, Songs to Forget, was one of the more underrated (and underheard) albums of last year. Part of that was they didn't play all that much, the band kind of imploded with main Prisoner Leo Maymind rebuilding it this year into a new precision touring unit. The first fruits of this is a free download EP, Los Angeles Guitar Dream, which is a bit different than what they've done before but is pretty great, especially the ethereal-yet-dancey title track." -Bill Pearis, Brooklyn Vegan

Biography:

Following an acclaimed and eclectic debut album (Songs to Forget, Exit Stencil 2008), Spanish Prisoners, led by songwriter Leo Maymind, had a busy year. The band was invited to play shows with Daniel Johnston, John Vanderslice, and Foals; they were featured as Paste Magazine’s NYC Band of the Week; and they were interviewed by such media outlets as Brooklyn Vegan and NYC Taper. Following this flurry of activity, Maymind set about to define a more cohesive identity for his ever-evolving musical project.

The concise “Los Angeles Guitar Dream” EP does just this, containing different angles of skewed, psychedelic pop that place a newfound emphasis on male / female vocal interplay (courtesy of new keyboardist and vocalist Amberly Hungerford), layered guitar textures, and effected acoustic sounds reminiscent of pre-festival era Flaming Lips. The title track, with its subtle electronic flourishes and hazy production, shows a newfound rhythmic intensity whose epic soundscape recalls Depression-era Cure or the recently departed Grandaddy. Spanish Prisoners manage to pack a multitude of ideas from the pop idiom into three hook-filled and intricately arranged songs that beg to be played over again.

Interviews:

Paste Magazine's NYC Band of the Week, Analogue Magazine (Dublin, Ireland), My Big Mouth Strikes Again, Columbus Dispatch

"Wonderfully unorthodox and quirky, Spanish Prisoners have unleashed upon an unsuspecting public a collection of damaged indie rock tracks guaranteed to make you smile. "

--My Big Mouth Strikes Again

"'Songs To Forget' contradicts itself from the title on--once heard, it's hard to forget these multi-layered, psychedelic pop songs."

--Quick Before it Melts

"It's hard not to fall in love with 'Songs to Forget' right from the outset."

--Rick Allen, The Other Paper

"...The set varies from country-folk to indie pop to atmospheric to psychedelic. People who are fans of Page France, old Beck, Neutral Milk Hotel and even Rogue Wave should find something they will enjoy on this debut."

--Terry McDaniel, 30music.com

"Each of the album’s songs are clustered in varied sonic textures (strings, electronics, strange murky noises, etc.), but at the heart of each is an attention to songcraft. Maymind may alter between neo-folkie and lo-fi tinkerer, but more than anything he’s a singer with a song."
